FIRST BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION MEETING HELD

March 25-26, 2010

The first Commission Public Meeting was held on March 25-26, 2010 in Washington, DC and transcripts of the meeting are available from the Blue Ribbon Commission website.  The Commission will produce an interim report within 18 months and a final report within 24 months.

 

DOE SECRETARY CHU ANNOUNCES BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION ON AMERICA'S NUCLEAR FUTURE

 

January 29, 2010

Along with the Administration's decision not to proceed with the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, President Obama directed Secretary Chu to establish a Commission to conduct a comprehensive review of policies for managing the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle.  The Commission will provide advice and make recommendations on issues including alternatives for the storage, processing, and disposal of civilian and defense spent nuclear fuel and nuclear waste. 

 

FISCAL YEAR 2011 BUDGET REQUEST ELIMINATES FUNDING FOR THE OFFICE OF CIVILIAN RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT (OCWRM).

 

The Office of Nuclear Energy will lead used fuel activities previously  performed by OCWRM.

 

DOE FILES MOTION TO WITHDRAW YUCCA MOUNTAIN LICENSE APPLICATION

March 3, 2010

The DOE filed a motion with the NRC to withdraw the license application for a high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain with prejudice on March 3, 2010.   

 

NYE COUNTY CONTENTIONS ADMITTED BY THE NRC FOR THE YUCCA MOUNTAIN LICENSING PROCEEDINGS WITH NO APPEALS

May 21, 2009
In accordance with 10 C.F.R.   § 2.1015(b), any appeal to the Commission from the May 11, 2009 Memorandum and Order: must have been filed with the Commission no later than ten (10) days after service of the order. A supporting brief must have accompanied the notice of appeal.

None of the 6 admitted Nye County contentions were appealed by the May 21, 2009 deadline.

May 11, 2009
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Atomic Safety and Licensing Boards (ASLBs), designated as "construction authorization boards," heard oral arguments on admissibility of contentions in Las Vegas from March 31 - April 2 .  The boards issued a combined order on May 11, 2009.

YUCCA MOUNTAIN HIGH LEVEL WASTE REPOSITORY PROCEEDINGS WERE HELD ON MARCH 31 - APRIL 2, 2009
