The
Nye County NWRPO tracks issues of regulatory
concern, decides which of these issues are
significant to the County's health, safety and
economic well being, and ensures the County's
positions and policies are considered by DOE, the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Nuclear
Waste Technical Review Board (NWTRB), and others.
The
NWRPO is also responsible for guaranteeing Nye
County can participate effectively in any licensing
proceeding for a repository
facility. NWRPO's regulatory and licensing
oversight activities include:
-
Monitoring EPA, DOE, NRC and other oversight
agencies' regulatory and licensing activities;
-
Addressing regulatory and licensing issues with
relevant agencies;
-
Working closely with the NWRPO on-site
representative to assure the Independent
Scientific Investigations Program (ISIP) is
addressing issues of regulatory and licensing
significance; and
-
Ensuring Nye County is prepared to participate
effectively in any future repository licensing
proceedings
License
Application
In June 2008, The Department of Energy
(DOE) submitted a license application to
the NRC to allow construction of the
Yucca Mountain geologic repository in
Nye County. In September, 2008 the NRC
accepted DOE’s License Application for
review. The NRC’s regulations allow
interested parties to participate in the Licensing
Process and these potential parties must have
submitted any contentions by December 22, 2008.
On December 19, 2008 the Nye County Nevada Nuclear Waste
Repository Project Office (NWRPO)
submitted seven contentions to the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for
the Yucca Mountain licensing
proceedings. Two of these are joint
contentions with Esmeralda, Mineral,
Churchill, Lander and Inyo (CA)
Counties.
A
press release and
summary of the seven
contentions and a full text version
of the document
"Nye
County, Nevada Petition to Intervene and
Contentions"
are available.
Licensing
Support Network (LSN)
The LSN is a web-based
information system containing documentary material
relevant to the Department of Energy's (DOE) planned
license application for
a high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
The LSN is intended to provide public access to relevant information prior
to submittal of the license application.
All potential parties to the
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's licensing
proceeding, including Nye County, are required to place relevant
documentary material in the LSN. The NRC's regulations for the LSN
are found in Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 2, Subpart
J “Procedures
Applicable to Proceedings for the Issuance of Licenses for the
Receipt of High-Level Radioactive Waste at a Geologic Repository”.
The Nye County LSN document collection was certified on January
17, 2008.
You can access the LSN on the
Internet at
